The Level 1 Umpire course is currently FREE and there are lots of dates on the England Hockey hub (link) website.
Completing this course is a good way to improve as a player, and as a supporter, through knowing the rules and their interpretation.
There is no requirement to go on to umpire games afterwards.
The course is completed online in 2 hours, you must be over 14 and have completed the (free) online rules test beforehand.

For EACH MATCH you umpire, we provide expenses of £20.

But how can being an Umpire help your personal development?
It isn’t as daunting as you might think - there are different skill levels that you can work your way through and there is lots of support, with opportunities to observe some games and watch experienced umpires in the company of another umpire so that you can discuss decision making whilst watching the game.

Register (for free) on the England Hockey website by clicking this link.
Step 2
Use the free online rules quiz to check/improve your knowledge and test yourself. You can save your progress and complete it in stages.
Step 3
After completing the rules test you can choose to do the Level 1 umpires course.
There are lots of dates available (check them here) and it is completed as a two-hour Zoom evening session (19.30 to 21.30).
Step 4
After some practice, and when you feel ready, we can assess you to become a Level 1 assessed umpire.
NOTHING, if you umpire for the club!
Initial outlay for the Level 1 umpire course is £30 and we'll give you that back once you've umpired your first match.

Fiona Crackles - Olympic and Commonwealth Success
Fiona - 2020 Olympic Bronze and 2022 Commonwealth Gold medallist - started out playing hockey at this club!
We're very proud of her accomplishments and continue to place great emphasis on the development of our players.
Phil Hyman - International Masters Series
Phil has been selected to play for England multiple times in the over 55's category and most recently played for the over 60's in the 2024 Masters World Cup in Auckland, New Zealand, where they earned a Bronze medal.
When not playing for England, Phil plays for our 1st team and is also our Umpire Coordinator.
2024 Women's Team of the Year, England Hockey Awards
2024 Ladies team promotion: Following an incredible 2023/24 season in North West Division 3 North, our ladies team were promoted to Division 2, and they're still there for the 2025/26 season!
The Men's 2nd team had to withdraw from the 2024/25 league due to insufficient numbers, but we hope to get back to having a 2nd team again.
